Grand Bahama affiliate host its 3rd
Annual Karate Tournament
The Bahamas Okinawan Goju Ryu Organization has much to be proud of as the new year saw its Grand Bahama affiliate host its 3rd Annual Karate
Tournament and the best junior kata performance at this tournament came from one of its own.

Students from five different karate clubs from New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco competed in The Bahamas Martial Arts Academy’s 3rd Annual Karate Tournament on January 20, 2007.

Competition was stiff in some of the divisions, but
great sportsmanship was shown throughout the one-day event.

This year, tournament director, Joye Ritchie-Greene awarded a $250.00 scholarship for the best junior
kata performance.  Winning over 15 other competitors was 12 year old Michelle Foulkes of the Bahamas Karate Academy.

This tournament was the first of several tournaments taking place this year in the country.  Each tournament is expected to showcase great talent and skill from
the karatekas.

The chief instructor of Bahamas Okinawan Goju Ryu, Elrick McKinney, said that while he is pleased with
what he has seen from the Okinawan karatekas, there is still much more work to be done in order for them to be ready for international competition.

Special training in kata and kumite is expected to
take place at least two more times this year and all Okinawan Goju Ryu karatekas must participate in
order to increase their chances of making the
national team.
